Here are some points to remember when calling or asking for the assistance of an NDT company such as Jamko.
Explain the problem thoroughly
Be sure to describe the unit history and any major disruptions to the unit while in normal operation. Inform us of the failure history including locations, frequency and suspected root cause of the failures.
Provide any metallurgical report which may be useful.
Drawings
Drawings of the unit with the problem areas identified are helpful in analyzing equipment needed and estimating the amount of time the inspection will take.
Samples or pictures
Provide us with any samples that you might have. Samples allow our staff to analyze and "mockup" which tooling would be most appropriate to bring or use. This also allows us to fine tune the procedure and eliminate other potential problems.
Point of entry obstacles or obstructions
Are there any obstructions or obstacles that may limit the type of tooling or methodology employed. For example, access to a six inch entry hole limited by an adjacent wall can be the difference in choosing a pole mounted camera system to a flexible push rod system. The amount of room available surrounding the immediate access entry point is as important as the actual entry point.
Environmental conditions
What type of condition is the component or suspect problem currently in? Is the unit full of water, standing or moving. If moving, how fast? Have you determined that the inspection target has not moved down or upstream?
Will our team need special Protective Personal Equipment (PPE) to enter the area? Will there be monitoring devices or remote monitoring such as O2 sensors available?
